6 times Leeds United owned Twitter
Leeds United have been pulling out performances on the pitch all season, but that’s not the only results they’ve been getting. Their social media team are ON FIRE right now, throwing shade everywhere. Here are our favourite Twitter moments from the maybe-nearly-Premier League side…
Reading FC
In Leeds recent match against Reading, the Leeds Twitter account retweeted Reading’s previous tweet sharing the team sheet which included ‘Reading fans’ as a 12th man. Leeds seized the opportunity to address this, but kept the shade to a minimum letting fans make their own judgement. UNTIL… Reading called upon spy gate.* In response to Leeds’ tweet, Reading said “but you already knew our team, right lads? ;)” accompanied by a binoculars GIF. Of course, sharp as a tack, Leeds replied to the GIF saying “nope, those are just for trying to find Reading FC in the table.” Eeeesh, shade.
Spy gate refers to an incident earlier in the season where Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa was caught having sent a representative to spy on their opponents Derby at their training ground in the days leading up to their Championship clash. Bielsa then admitted to having spied on all of his oppositions not only throughout the season, but his whole career. Unsurprisingly, Leeds faced a £200,000 fine as a result of the debacle.
Pizza Hut
We should mention now, many of these tweets will include ‘spy gate’ references — could be something to do with it being absolutely top class shithousery content. One week after spy gate, Pizza Hut bit the bullet and fired the shots towards Leeds. They tweeted the club saying that they had seen someone peering through the windows of their kitchen, and asked whether they were planning on adding pizza to the menu. Leeds however were not taking any of this lip, firing back with “prefer Dominos thanks! They don’t take a week to deliver a tweet.” However, not to be outdone, Pizza Hut came storming in with a definitive “bit rich that from a club who haven’t delivered since 1992.” Kudos to both for this one — top crack.
Swansea City
He who laughs last laughs the longest… Leeds silenced their welsh opponents as they beat them at home following the failed transfer of Swans player Daniel James to Elland Road. Of course, however, the scoreline wasn’t quite enough for Leeds. The social team hopped straight on Twitter to rub salt in the wounds after Swansea ‘failed to answer’ as Leeds ‘dial in a winning performance’. Not bitter at all then lads?
Gary Rowett
If you should dare to publicly criticise Leeds, you better be ready for the Twitter backlash — something the ex-Stoke manager Gary Rowett found out the hard way! Rowett suggested that Leeds could fall short of promotion again this season. These comments came after the Stoke and Leeds’ championship clash at the start of the season — where Rowett’s Stoke side suffered a 3–1 defeat to Leeds. Delighted with the opportunity, Leeds took to Twitter once again to remind Rowett of score from the beginning of the season. Can’t get away with anything these days Gary.
Lee Johnson
Manager of Bristol City took to the press to express his opinion on his sides defeat to Leeds, saying that he felt that Leeds were lucky and that he wasn’t impressed with their performance. Too good of an opportunity to pass up for Leeds Twitter account obviously, they jibed the Robins manager with the classic old ‘don’t say it meme’. You can practically hear them sniggering as they type from here.
Niall Horan
Their harsh words aren’t just reserved for the football industry either, even pop star Niall Horan got dealt a piece of the action. The former One Direction singer boldly tweeted that ‘no one likes Leeds’, which as you can imagine went down a treat in the LUFC offices. The response was just as bold from the social team, telling the star that no one liked his solo career. Blimey — that escalated!!
